Your time and my time: a temporal approach to groupware calendar systems
نویسنده
چکیده
Groupware calendar systems (GCS)—on-line, networked calendar software—are increasingly being used in large organizations. This paper presents a study of the use of GCS in organizations. It reviews major issues in the area, showing that current efforts lack attention to the temporal aspect, which seems to be at the center of a GCS. Sociotemporal order is a foundation of social organization, and as such it is embedded in the use of GCS. The paper reports on a survey of GCS use in a business organization to show the relevancy of the temporal approach. It concludes by showing the increasing importance of GCS in particular and calendar technologies in general in new patterns of working (virtual, mobile, and flexible) in emerging forms of organizations. # 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Social, Individual & Technological Issues for Groupware Calendar Systems
1 This research was conducted while the author was at the Information & Computer Science Department, University of California, Irvine. ABSTRACT Designing and deploying groupware is difficult. Groupware evaluation and design are often approached from a single perspective, with a technologically-, individually-, or socially-centered focus. A study of Groupware Calendar Systems (GCSs) highlights t...
متن کاملGroupware Calendar Systems (GCS) Modelling in a Virtual Environment: Using Role Activity Diagram (RAD)
As technology moves away from the desktop to a world of loosely coupled devices, groupware applications are transforming communications by enabling new ways of processing and delivering work across time and space. This virtual environment becomes all pervasive, temporal coupling takes place over the web via communication technologies such as e-mail, videoconference and groupware calendar system...
متن کاملIntelligent groupware to support communication and persona management
In addition to providing other benefits, groupware calendar systems inform colleagues about a coworker’s location and availability. However, they often exhibit inaccuracies that do not reflect the true schedules of coworkers. I believe that such event attendance can be modeled and accessed through the use of a context-aware, intelligent interface component. Predictions of attendance can then be...
متن کاملRequirements for Groupware Calendar Systems (GCS): Addressing Social Relationships
This paper challenges the generic single conceptual viewpoint that designers have of groupware and specifically Groupware Calendar Systems (GCS). From the analysis of interviews, we categorized different calendar usage and activity that distinguish between the ‘Private Calendar’, the ‘Public Calendar’ and the ‘Shared Calendars’. Based on this categorization, we identified the dynamic relationsh...
متن کاملModelling Periodic Temporal Notions by Labelled Partitionings - The PartLib Library
The key notion for modelling calendar systems and many other periodic temporal notion is the mathematical concept of a partitioning of the real numbers. A partitioning of R splits the time axis into a sequence of intervals. Basic time units like seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years etc. can all be represented by partitionings of R with finite partitions. Besides the basic time un...
